About Us
Based in Cremorne, Praxis Neurophysiology is a bespoke provider of intraoperative neurophysiology for procedures of the spine and brain, offering unparalleled expertise and service to all hospitals in Victoria.
Our strategic vision is to be the gold standard of intraoperative neurophysiology that contributes to surgical procedures to maximise patient outcomes. To be the first choice surgical neurophysiology provider for all surgical teams based on reputation for positive clinical outcomes. To create a lasting legacy of clinical excellence via education and consulting. We can do this because we are run by clinical professionals, not by business experts.
What is Praxis?
Praxis is defined as the practical application of theoretical knowledge and science. We embody this definition by taking peer reviewed clinical research and applying this to our everyday practice, to ensure we maintain the gold standard, and clinical excellence.
Who is Praxis?
Praxis was founded in 2024 by Thomas Verhellen, a senior neurophysiology scientist that has been practising clinical neuroscience since 2017. Thomas graduated in 2017 from Swinburne University of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Psychophysiology. In 2018 Thomas started his intraoperative neurophysiological training, and quickly became involved in more specialised procedures and monitoring techniques. Since, Thomas has been heavily involved in clinical education of new scientists as well as clinical management over wider areas. Now in 2024, Thomas founded Praxis Neurophysiology to bring positive change to intraoperative neurophysiology.
What is Intraoperative Neurophysiology?
Intraoperative neurophysiology is a discipline of clinical neuroscience that is used in the operating theatres of orthopaedics and neurosurgery, that helps monitor the real time function of the human nervous system.
During brain, brainstem, spinal cord and vascular procedures, there is risk of damage to neurological structures that may impede our ability to feel, hear, speak, move and touch. Therefore neurophysiology is employed in real time during surgery to help identify, and monitor the functional status of these critical structures, to ensure optimal post-operative outcomes.
This type of monitoring is performed by highly trained Neurophysiology Scientists, who use a sensitive array of electrodes to stimulate and record electrical activity from muscles and nerves, and communicate with the surgical team to provide real time information during the surgical procedure.
